Title: Visual Art Teacher

Purpose of Position: To empower students to express themselves, build confidence, and develop empathy through the transformative power of the visual arts.

Employment Status: Full-time Reporting

Reports to: Principal

Location: Assigned Campus

Essential Functions:

 The Visual Arts Teacher fosters creativity, self-expression, and artistic skills in students through engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction in visual art. This position supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of elementary and middle school students by providing opportunities to explore various art media, techniques, and art history. The teacher cultivates a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages innovation, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the visual arts for both students in the General Ed Visual Arts and the Talented in the Visual Arts classes. 

The Visual Arts Teacher’s essential duties and responsibilities are as follows:  

  • Plan and implement a comprehensive visual arts curriculum aligned with state and national art standards.
  • Introduce students to a variety of media (drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, digital art, etc.) and artistic techniques.
  • Develop age-appropriate lessons that integrate art history, critique, and studio production.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student creativity and expression.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs, interests, and skill levels of students.
  • Organize and display student artwork throughout the school and participate in school-wide exhibitions or events.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to integrate art into interdisciplinary projects and themes.
  • Maintain classroom materials, manage inventory and art supplies, and ensure proper use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Communicate regularly with families about student progress and classroom activities.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school-wide initiatives.

For the Talented in the Visual Arts Program:

  • Read and interpret each student’s “Integrated Multidisciplinary Evaluation Report” from Student Evaluation and Support Services.
  • Develop and implement an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) for each student.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate and current records, service logs, and draft Progress Reports as mandated. 
  • Understand and manage student caseloads in State Special Education Reporting System (eSER)
  • Organize and manage timelines, including IEP meetings and re-evaluation meetings
  • Report to Special Education Coordinator and follow directives regarding instruction and compliance

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the principal or other supervisors, including but not limited to:
  • Supporting after-school or extracurricular activities.
  • Assisting with school-wide events or initiatives.
  • Providing coverage for other staff as needed.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of a safe and clean school environment.

Education, Training and Experience:

REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Certification or ability to gain certification as a Teacher in the instructional area
  • Experience creating and successfully managing a classroom environment

PREFERRED

  • Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Arts Education, or related field
  • Valid Louisiana teaching certification preferred.
  • Experience in and/or understanding of the public school system including charter schools
